So, I am sure a lot of you are like, “big deal”.
But.
nine inch nails, the recording persona of Trent Reznor, ditched his label and completely went independent in the past months. He is releasing everything digitally on his own, and in physical format, too - with amazing packaging, to boot.
This newest LP - “The Slip” - is completely and utterly free, and can be downloaded today from his website. And, for the geeks out there - he released it under Creative Commons licensing, and when you download the larger/higher-quality files [and I am talking anything from MP3 to FLAC to WAVE 24/96] - you use BitTorrent.
How did I know something was coming today, specifically? By a carefully-placed ID3 tag in the free release of the single “Discipline”, that was put out a week or so ago.
This is awesome. On lots of levels.
He’s showing people how this stuff needs to be done.
I am listening to it now, and so far, it’s excellent. I still have not figured out if it’s a continuation of his “Year Zero” concept album/alternate reality game from last year - but time will tell on that level soon, I am sure.
